Overview: This paper reports an opinion survey completed by 85 of the 151 registered participants at the 2024 Black Holes Inside and Out conference in Copenhagen. It explores disagreements about black-hole information, quantum interpretations, quantum gravity, dark matter, dark energy, and the early universe; several leading proposals were the most popular specific answers without gaining majority support.

- Quantum interpretations (more technical): Quantum Mechanics — Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy — Introduces the theory’s framework and measurement problem, providing context for disagreement over interpretation despite its predictive success.[3]
- Quantum gravity and black holes (more technical): Quantum Gravity — Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy — Explains the challenge of reconciling relativity with quantum theory and surveys approaches including string theory and loop quantum gravity, alongside black-hole thermodynamics.[4]
- Follow-up survey and accessible commentary: Far from Settled: Respondents at Odds over Greatest Physics Mysteries — APS Physics Magazine — A readable account of the later, larger Big Mysteries Survey. Its research paper explicitly compares its 1,675 respondents with the Copenhagen sample. The samples differ, so differences in answers do not by themselves demonstrate changes in physicists’ views over time.[5][6]
